All About Bernedoodles

What is a Bernadoodle?

Bernedoodles are an intentional cross between a standard Poodle and a Bernese Mountain Dog.  Our Bernedoodle puppies are 50% Bernese Mountain Dog & 50% Poodle. F1 Bernedoodles are currently the most common and known to have “hybrid vigor”.  When you cross two different breeds, they tend to have better health because of the variation in lines/breeds that are prone to different genetic diseases.

Bernedoodles are compatible with most families that have MILD allergies. Most people that are allergic to dogs can tolerate the F1 Generation, but everyone is different.  Their coat should be hypo-allergenic and will be wavy and fluffy.

Poodles are highly intelligent, non-shedding, and generally healthy.  They generally range in size from 50-80 pounds.  Smaller standards tend to be 50-75 pounds and larger standards tend to be 80-100 pounds. Sonny weighs in at 63 pounds!

Just like how people love the characteristics that Golden Retrievers bring to mixed breeds, the same goes for the Bernese Mountain Dogs or Berners (Berner Sennenhund in German).  These gentle giants often share their goofy, fun-loving personalities with their offspring.  Purposefully bred as farm dogs in the Swiss Alps, Berners are built for hard work, which explains how robust and powerful they are.  Aside from excelling in tracking, herding, and agility, the Bernese Mountain Dog is entirely dedicated to its family and extremely loyal.

A Bernedoodle is fun, athletic, entertaining, loyal, friendly, great with children and other animals, loving, and extremely smart!  They often exhibit playful and silly personalities and have a fun-loving temperament.

Sizes and coloring vary, based on the sire. We expect our puppies to mature between 60-80 pounds. We breed for tri colors (like the Bernese) and merles, but sometimes there are sables, black and brown, or black and whites. Also, sometimes there black puppies with small white markings. It all depends on the genetic expression of the litter!

Why should I choose a Bernedoodle?

Well-bred Bernedoodles get many of the best personality traits from the Poodle and the Bernese Mountain Dog.  These hybrids are affectionate and playful, which makes them excellent pets for families and good playmates for children. They love to spend time with everyone in the family.

Hypoallergenic The Poodles’ non-shedding coat is hypoallergenic. Because the poodle coat is the dominant gene, many poodle crosses (often called doodles) get the non-shedding coat. This is particularly the case with thick-coated dogs like the Bernese Mountain Dog. Families who want an inside dog appreciate the low-to-non shedding coat that the Bernedoodle offers.

Trainable Bernese Mountain Dogs and Poodles are both extremely easy to train. Poodles are the most frequently used dog in circus acts or on shows like America’s Got Talent because they are extremely intelligent, eager to please, and easy to train. Bernedoodles are easy to house train and teach other basic training commands.  Puppies are eager to please and pleasant to train.

Healthy The Bernese Mountain Dog’s lifespan is usually 8-10 years. On average, doodles live 4-5 years longer than that. Hybrid vigor (the added strength of combining different breeds) causes doodles to typically be healthy. Poodles are far less likely to develop Gastric Torsion (bloat), hip dysplasia, and elbow dysplasia than the Bernese Mountain Dog. This means that the Bernedoodle is much less likely to struggle with these health issues that are common in a purebred Bernese Mountain Dog.

Variety By combining the Bernese Mountain Dog with the Poodle, reliable breeders can breed Bernedoodles in the typical tri-colored look of the Bernese, sables, merles, bi-colors, phantoms, or single colors.  Bernedoodles can also be bred in other colors (poodles come in red, chocolate, apricot, and parti-colors).
